Our second and third recitals this autumn both feature organists of Lincoln Cathedral, both of them making return visits. Jeffrey Makinson features three musicians who performed in Nottingham and one who played nearby. Guilmant played at St Mary’s, and gives us some good rousing nineteenth-century Handel. Bairstow played at Southwell Minster while Elgar conducted in Nottingham, possibly at the Albert Hall. His Sospiri was originally intended as a companion piece to Salut d’Amour, but its composition date in the summer of 1914 dictated a more sombre offering. It is heard in an arrangement by Robert Quinney, who has given a recital at the Albert Hall. S S Wesley, the father of modern cathedral music (he presided in four of them) was at Exeter when he commemorated the church bells at Holsworthy, while J S Bach, “the father of us all” as Debussy called him, is represented by his Dorian Toccata and Fugue; we also hear from his first teacher, Georg Böhm. To conclude, two early twentieth-century pieces from Henri Mulet: Rosace magically commemorates the rose window at Sacre-Coeur, in whose shadow Mulet was brought up in Montmartre, while Carillon-Sortie provides a rousing finale.

Jeffrey Makinson is Organist and Assistant Director of Music at Lincoln Cathedral.
He received his musical training at the Royal Northern College of Music and at Manchester University. He subsequently became Organ Scholar at York Minster for two years before spending five years as Assistant Organist at Lincoln Cathedral, where he was proud to be involved in the training of the first girl choristers in the cathedral’s history.
He moved to Manchester Cathedral as Sub-Organist in 1999. During his time in Manchester, he was Tutor of Organ at the Royal Northern College of Music and at Manchester University and Tutor in Piano at Chetham’s School of Music.
Jeffrey returned to Lincoln in January 2015. As part of his duties at the Cathedral, Jeffrey accompanies the cathedral choir for most of the choral services and concerts and directs the girl choristers as well as the cathedral consort.
Alongside his work in Lincoln, he maintains a busy schedule as a recitalist, accompanist, conductor, teacher and adjudicator in the city and across the country.
As an organist, Jeffrey has performed across Europe and North America.
In the United Kingdom, he has given concerts at most of the major cathedrals, abbeys, collegiate chapels, churches and concert halls, including numerous recitals at Westminster Abbey, Westminster Cathedral, St Paul’s Cathedral and King’s College, Cambridge.
Jeffrey is an accredited teacher for the Royal College of Organists Academy. He regularly works as an examiner for the RCO and has taught on numerous ‘Royal College of Organists’ and ‘Oundle for Organists’ courses.
As an orchestral musician, he has worked alongside some of the country’s leading ensembles, including the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Northern Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Recent projects have included a solo recording on the Father Willis organ of Lincoln Cathedral for online platform ‘Beauty in Sound’ and a collaboration with recording artist Floating Points and the Los Angeles Concert Orchestra, culminating in a performance of the award-winning album ‘Promises’ at the Hollywood Bowl.
