Tom Corfield makes a welcome return to the Albert Hall in a programme rich in the Romantic music which he has made such a speciality. Howells, often thought of as the father of modern cathedral music, is heard in a piece composed shortly after the Binns organ was installed, while two Germans show their understanding of the English romantic organ: Mendelssohn was one of the first players to be heard on the Birmingham Town Hall organ, while Kaleidoscope is a wonderful souvenir of the English organs encountered by its composer during the 1930 Karg-Elert Festival in London. Franz Schmidt, writing at the same time, had a more classical organ in mind, but the more modern Alan Ridout sees its potential for high drama. And framing the programme are J S Bach, “the father of us all”, and the arch-romantic Stanford, another composer whose noble Postlude is ideally suited to this organ.
